K-TYPE THERMOCOUPLE

The Nickel-Chromium / Nickel-Alumel Type K thermocouple is widely recognized as the most commonly used thermocouple. It is known for its affordability, accuracy, reliability, and its ability to measure a wide range of temperatures.

Due to its high resistance to radiation, the type K thermocouple is frequently utilized in nuclear applications. It can withstand continuous temperatures of up to approximately 1260 °C.

L-TYPE THERMOCOUPLE

L-type thermocouples are utilized for measuring the temperature of metal melts and salt baths. The reason for employing L-type thermocouples in such applications is to safeguard the thermocouple head from the harsh temperature and corrosive conditions present in the open bath.

PT100 THERMOCOUPLE

Resistance thermometers, such as PT 100 temperature sensors, are widely used in temperature measurement. These sensors are often referred to as Pt100 sensors, despite the fact that they may not always be of the RTD Pt100 type. The “Pt” in Pt100 indicates that the sensor is made of Platinum, while the “100” signifies that at 0°C, the sensor has a resistance of 100 ohms (Ω).

RTD

RTD, which stands for Resistance Temperature Detector, is a broad term that includes temperature sensors functioning on the basis of resistance alteration with temperature. PT100, on the other hand, is a particular kind of RTD that employs platinum as the sensing element, having a nominal resistance of 100 ohms at 0°C. Hence, the main distinction lies in the material utilized for the sensing element, with PT100 specifically denoting platinum-based RTDs.

 

The Type K Thermocouple offers the broadest operating temperature range. It is composed of a non-magnetic positive leg and a magnetic negative leg. The traditional base metal used in the K Type Thermocouple allows it to function at high temperatures and provide an extensive operating temperature range.

The PT 100 temperature sensors are widely recognized as the predominant form of platinum resistance thermometers. The term “Pt” signifies that the sensor is constructed using Platinum (Pt), while “100” indicates that the sensor exhibits a resistance of 100 ohms (Ω) at 0°C.

A resistance thermometer functions as a temperature sensor, utilizing an element that relies on resistance to gauge temperature. Popular names for this type of thermometer include RTDs (resistance temperature detectors), RT, Pt100 RTD, or Pt1000.

RTD PT100 temperature sensors function by utilizing the principle that the electrical resistance of platinum alters in a predictable manner in response to temperature fluctuations. As the temperature rises, so does the resistance of the platinum element. This alteration in resistance is precisely measured and then transformed into temperature readings through the use of suitable algorithms or conversion tables.

Type S thermocouples, as outlined in the standard DIN EN 60584, can operate within a temperature range of 0 to +1600°C (class 1) with a maximum deviation of ±1.0°C or [1 + (t – 1100) x 0.003] °C. In class 2, the temperature range for a type S thermocouple remains at 0 to +1600°C.

The J Type thermocouple, also known as iron-constantan thermocouple, is widely used for various applications. It has a temperature range of around -40 to +750 °C and exhibits a sensitivity of 55 µV/°C.

Type R thermocouples, consisting of Platinum versus 13% Rhodium/Platinum, can be utilized at temperatures up to 1480°C (2,700°F). Despite their high stability, they are vulnerable to damage in reducing atmospheres.

The Type N Thermocouple is a type of base metal thermocouple that is constructed using conductors composed of Nickel – Chromium – Silicon and Nickel – Silicon alloys. This particular thermocouple is specifically designed for accurately measuring temperatures up to +1250°C.

Thermocouple Type E, also referred to as Chromel-Constantan, is renowned for its exceptional output, which happens to be the highest among the commonly utilized devices. However, this attribute holds less significance in the present era of ultra stable solid state amplifiers.
