Copper Tube / Copper Pipe comes in two main categories – plumbing tubes and air conditioning/refrigeration (ACR) tubes, available in both drawn (hard) and annealed (soft) tempers. Due to its excellent corrosion resistance, copper tubing is commonly utilized in water distribution systems, oil fuel transfer lines, non-flammable medical-gas systems, and as refrigerant lines in HVAC systems. Various methods such as flare connection, compression connection, pressed connection, or solder are used to join copper tubing.

Copper pipes are composed of over 99.9% pure copper. The extraction of pure copper is a crucial step in the production process, more so than the fabrication and installation stages. These pipes are manufactured to meet JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) and ASTM standards. Each type of pipe serves a different purpose and therefore must adhere to specific standards to ensure they meet the necessary specifications. The JIS H3300 C1220T copper pipe is ideal for water-related applications, ranging from shower systems to overall water distribution in buildings or homes. On the other hand, the ASTM B88 copper tube is better suited for heat-sensitive uses like air conditioning and refrigeration.

The outer diameter of copper pipes can be measured in inches (“), nominal Bore (NB), and metric size. The nominal bore and outer diameter sizes are directly related to each other. Specifically, the outer diameter is consistently 1/8 inch larger than the nominal size. For instance, a 2” nominal bore copper pipe corresponds to a 2-1/8″ outer diameter. This sizing system is applicable to all three common types of pipe. The diameter sizes available range from 6 mm to 54 mm, while the nominal bore sizes available range from 1/8” to 4”.

Soft copper tubing, also known as ductile copper tubing, offers the advantage of easy bending to navigate obstacles along its path. Although the drawing process used to size the tubing results in work hardening, making the copper rigid, it is carefully annealed to restore its softness. This annealing process adds to the production cost, making it more expensive compared to non-annealed, rigid copper tubing. Soft copper tubing can be joined using any of the three methods used for rigid copper, and it is the only suitable type for flare connections. Due to its flexibility and versatility, soft copper is widely preferred for refrigerant lines in split-system air conditioners and heat pumps.

RIGID COPPER – HARD LENGTH COPPER

Copper tubing known as rigid or “hard” copper is a popular option for water lines. This type of tubing, often referred to as “pipe”, is identified by nominal pipe size or inner diameter. It is connected using methods such as soldering/sweating, roll grooving, compression, or crimping/pressing. Due to the work hardening during the drawing process, rigid copper cannot be bent and requires elbow fittings to navigate corners or obstacles. However, through a process called annealing, rigid copper can be softened and bent/form without risk of cracking.

Common wall-thicknesses of copper tubing are K Type, L Type, M Type, & DWV Type.

Type K tubing is renowned for its exceptionally thick wall section among the three pressure rated tubing types. It is frequently employed for burying deep underground, particularly beneath sidewalks and streets. To comply with plumbing regulations, it necessitates a corrosion protection coating or a continuous polyethylene sleeve. In the United States, Type K tubing is typically identifiable by its green-colored printing. This specific pipe designation finds extensive usage in the Refrigeration Industry.

Type L features a slimmer pipe wall section and is commonly utilized in residential and commercial water supply and pressure systems. In the United States, it is typically identified by blue-colored printing.

Type M features a thinner pipe wall section and is commonly utilized in low-pressure heating systems for residential and commercial purposes. In the United States, it is typically identified by its red-colored printing.

Type DWV features the most slender wall section and is typically appropriate solely for unpressurized uses, like drain, waste, and vent (DWV) systems. It is commonly identified by yellow or light orange markings in the United States, with popular dimensions including 1-1⁄4, 1-1⁄2, and 2-inch copper tube size.

Types K and L are commonly found in both hard drawn straight sections and in rolls of soft annealed tubing, while type M and DWV are typically only found in hard drawn straight sections.
